With the latest update, Google Maps has fully integrated support for iOS 16 by introducing new lock screen widgets—making navigation faster and more convenient than ever on your iPhone.

What’s New in Google Maps for iOS 16?

As part of iOS 16’s lock screen customization features, users can now add widgets directly to their lock screen. Google Maps now joins the lineup of apps offering lock screen widgets, alongside others like Gmail, Chrome, Google Drive, and Google News.

Types of Google Maps Lock Screen Widgets

Google Maps offers two widget options for your iOS 16 lock screen:

  1. Frequent Trips Widget

    • A double-slot widget that provides one-tap access to your favorite destinations.

    • Ideal for quickly navigating to places like home, work, or other saved locations.

  2. Nearby Search Widget

    • Lets you instantly search for nearby places like restaurants, gas stations, coffee shops, or other services.

    • Functions similarly to the suggestion chips on the main Google Maps screen.

Always-On Access for iPhone 14 Pro Users

If you’re using an iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max, these widgets are accessible even when your phone is idle thanks to the always-on display feature—making it easier than ever to get directions or find local businesses at a glance.

Why Choose Google Maps Widgets?

Although Apple Maps is the default navigation app on iPhones, Google Maps remains a top choice for many users due to its advanced features and user-friendly interface. With the addition of lock screen widgets, Google Maps now offers a quicker way to get directions or explore your surroundings—something Apple Maps currently doesn’t support.

How to Add Google Maps Widgets to Your iOS 16 Lock Screen

To add the new widgets:

  1. Unlock your iPhone and go to the lock screen.

  2. Tap and hold on the lock screen, then tap Customize.

  3. Choose Lock Screen, then tap the widget area.

  4. Scroll to Google Maps, then drag your desired widget (Frequent Trips or Nearby Search) into the widget area.

  5. Tap Done to save your changes.

Now you’re ready to navigate faster than ever—right from your lock screen.
