In Maps, how to map a route with multiple stops?

Maps' most recent update includes the ability to create multi-stop routes.

If you know how to map a route with multiple stops in iOS Maps, you can use your iPhone to navigate from one errand to the next much more easily. Previous versions of the iPhone's built-in mapping software allowed you to add stops along the way in a route, but iOS 16 greatly expands that capability.

Maps on Apple's updated iPhone software now allows you to plan multi-stop routes before you even get on the road. Even better, you can include up to 15 stops in a single trip, which is useful for completing multiple tasks in a single car ride or inserting stops and side quests on your next road trip.

For the time being, Maps' multi-stop feature is limited to driving directions. If you want to plan a route by foot, public transportation, bicycle, or ride-sharing — all of the options in Maps — you won't be able to add multiple stops. Nonetheless, this is a welcome addition that complements a feature already available to Google Maps users.

1. Enter a destination in the Maps search bar, then tap on the driving directions icon on the next screen. (It's on the far left of the screen, just below the location name.)

2. Maps will display a route from your current location to the destination you selected on the Directions screen. Below that, you'll see an Add Stop button; tap it to add another destination to your route.

3. You will be directed to a search screen. Enter the new location to be added as an extra stop.

4. Maps will incorporate that stop into your route. You can keep adding stops to your route by tapping Add Stop or Go once you're ready to travel.

Maps will plot your multiple stops in the order you enter them, but if you want to change the order, tap and hold on the three horizontal bars next to the stop you want to reposition. Drag that stop up or down the route to where you want it.

This iOS 16 Maps enhancement is just one of many new features coming to the iPhone with the iOS 16 software update. Our look at the many iOS 16 features can help you understand how to use the major features, such as how to schedule emails and how to undo an email in iOS 16's Mail app. We also show you how to customise the appearance of iPhone notifications.
